Tattoo Designs Then

Tattoo Designs Then

In traditional societies tattooing may have been very common, but it was ceremonial rather than purely decorative. You had to earn your tattoos, for the most part, and you were restricted in terms of choice of tattoo designs.

Then, in western society, tattooing briefly became popular among the upper classes in the seventeenth century. Both men and women got tattoos, but it was an expensive process few could afford. And when the invention of the tattoo gun made it affordable it became less socially acceptable. For a time only sailors and those who had a criminal or gang-related past had tattoos. Up until a few decades ago, in fact, only men had them and though there were some great tattoo designs, they were rather limited in range.

Tattoo Designs Today

Tattoo designs

So much choice

Fast forward to today: men and women, young and old alike are drawn to tattoos. There is little if any social stigma left. Even people you might never expect to have tattoos – like middle aged or older women – have them and love them. And in terms of tattoo designs, again, there are no limits. We draw on world history, cross cultural designs, and modern art. A Maori symbol might make a cool tattoo design, but so might something from the Celtic or Native American culture. With all that choice, how do you go about choosing tattoo designs?

Start with everyone’s favorite information source – the internet. Look for free tattoo designs online and you’ll find a wealth of images. It may take some searching, but eventually you will come up with so many designs that the problem becomes narrowing it down to those you find attractive and are able to use. Here are some things to keep in mind: often, simple tattoo designs are the best because they allow for the boldest lines. Colors are great, but they do tend to fade a bit faster than black, so that’s another thing to keep in mind. If you haven’t gotten a tattoo before and you don’t have an image in mind, look for small tattoo designs. Some of them can be added to later on, but a smaller image is a great place to start.

Finally, enjoy yourself. The fact that there are so many tattoo designs available to day is reminiscent of a lot other things in our culture. For example, if you live in a larger town or city, chances are that you have food from many different world cuisines easily available to you. All the options can make choosing harder, but the payoff is great. The main thing about choosing tattoo designs is to choose one that appeals to you, personally – you’re the one who’s going to be living with it!

Piercings

While tattoos are the best known form of body art, body and facial piercing are far more common among the general population of cultures throughout the world. Even in the most conservative western households, ear piercing is typically viewed as a young woman enters into adolescence.

Other traditional cultures incorporate body piercings into symbols of cultural conformity or spiritual dedication. However, the vast majority of body piercing in modern society is used as:

There are nearly as many different types of piercings as there are cultures that embrace them. Popular types body piercings that are used as fashion or cultural statements include lip piercings, nose piercings, belly button piercings, monroe piercings, hip piercings and ear piercings.

Ear piercing has been done since ancient times and was also the first kind of body modification that was socially accepted in the Western world. Ötzi the Iceman, the mummified body of a man who lived around 3300 BC, had pierced ears. Earrings are also mentioned in the Bible. A variant of ear piercing is cartilage piercing and tragus piercing.

Ear piercing

Nose piercings gained a lot of popularity in the West during the 1990s. In earlier times, nose rings were worn by Native Americans, the Aztecs, Incas, Australian aboriginals and many more tribal cultures. There are 2 variants of nose piercing: septum piercing and nostril piercing.

Corset piercing imitates the lacing of a corset by lacing a series of surface piercings on the back. It is usually worn by women and is most often of a temporary kind because corset piercings heal badly. On photo this type of body art is usually shown laced, but's impossible keep them laced for long periods of time.

Corset piercing

The tongue is the second most popular place to have a piercing (the ear is the most popular). Ritual tongue piercing was done by the Aztecs and Incas to honor the gods. The girl in the photo below has a tongue piercing as well as a Monroe piercing. Monroe piercings imitate a beauty spot such as Marilyn Monroe had one. They are also known as a Crawford (Cindy Crawford) or a Madonna.

Elaine Davidson, a Scottish woman, has the world record for extreme piercing, she has about 1903 of them (see picture above).

Scarification and Extreme Body Modification

Nowhere in the world of body art is the ritualistic aspect of this art form more obvious than scarification. While scarification is certainly not for everyone, it is rooted in the same tribal traditions as piercings and has been found across cultures as an important rite of passage marking the end of one's adolescence.

In modern society, advanced body modification has becoming particularly popular form of male body art. Taken to its most extreme expression, this form of body modification can involve some modifications that are not for the faint of heart.

The primary forms of extreme body modification include:

As you might expect, extreme body modification is not without its risks. Most forms of scarification and implants are technically surgical procedures, and many extreme body artists lack formal medical training. As a result, it is considered largely up to the people who elect to undergo these procedures to be responsible for their own medical safety. The vast majority of body modification enthusiasts take their health very seriously though.

Professional and amateur photography of examples of extreme body modification can be found in many corners of the internet, but the most important website to this lifestyle and body modification in general is found at the huge website BME.com. Body Modification Ezine, or BME, also has excellent resources on safety standards, a vast archive of informative articles and a thriving forum of active members.

Body Painting

Body painting

Body painting as applied by the
Nuba (Sudan, Africa)

Although it is impossible to know for certain, it seems likely that ancient peoples were painting there faces and bodies far before the first tattoos or piercings were innovated. By some, body painting is considered the most early form of art. The question of how many hundreds of thousands of years our ancestors may have decorated their bodies with simple paints over countless generations of hunters and gatherers is lost to the ages.

Body painting with natural pigments such as clay existed in most tribal communities such as the indigenous people of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. In India and the Middle East, body painting is known as Mehndi. Mehndi is a form of body painting that uses dyes made from Henna. It is typically applied on brides.

Body and face painting were used for various reasons:

  • Ceremonial
  • Camouflage during hunting or war
  • Religious

Here in the modern world, contemporary body painting has become an established media of fine art during the course of the last couple of decades. Temporary tattoo artists have broken into the world of contemporary art through the use of full body painting that became progressively more refined. The words body painting are used for large scale body art, while smaller kinds of temporary body art is referred to as temporary tattoo.

Today's top body artists use airbrush tattoos to create meaningful works of art in which the body serves as both the medium and the message that is larger than the sum of its parts. The New Zealand body painter called Joanne Gair (aka Kiwi Jo) is considered one of the world's leading body paint artist. Her art appeared in the Swimsuit Issues from Sports Illustrated from 1999 to 2009. One of her most famous works is her Disappearing Model:

Body painting

The purpose of less formal body painting and face painting is often just to have some fun with one's body and enjoy a temporary change from their usual skin. The uses of informal body painting can range from face painting at the county fair to henna tattoos for young adults to full body art that looks like clothing.

Body Art

Although ink tattoos are the most popular modern form of body art, human beings have been adorning their bodies for aesthetic or ritualistic reasons in some manner or another for thousands of years. Whether it is with the fine strokes of an artist's airbrush or the precision slices of an expert's scalpel, the world of human body art and body modification is virtually limitless in its manifestations.

Let's take a look at the anthropology of body art and survey the most popular expressions of this art form in today's world.

The History of Body Art

When studying body art history, it is striking to notice how the different versions of both modern and tribal body art are reflections of the societies that their subjects lived within. Body art is nearly always heavily influenced by the aesthetic and social taboos of the societies that encourage their use.

Historically, permanent body art was used to:

  • Correct the human form into the given culture's concept of ideal physical beauty.
  • The acceptance of such adornment was considered a part of reaching social maturity. Body art rituals served as a rite of passage.
  • Identification: tribe members and outsiders can identify each other by means of their body art.
  • Social status: usually, the bigger the body modifications, the higher on the social ladder someone was.
  • Magical protection: body art often served as a talisman.

Anthropologists have discovered that body art is one of the human universals that are found in every culture on the planet. Although one needs to go no further than the local shopping mall to find examples of modern tribal body art, it is often easier to observe cultural body modification by studying a culture outside of one's own.

Throughout Africa, examples of African body art have been found in virtual every traditional society. Some of the best known examples of African body art include:

  • Neck stretching: a long neck is a beauty ideal in some African and Asian cultures. The neck is gradually elongated with neck rings.
  • Lip stretching: several tribes are known for lip stretching, like the Mursi women of Ethiopia and the Botocudo women of Brazil. The stretching is done with the aid of lip plates (aka lip plugs or lip discs). In the Mursi tribe, the size of the lip disc correspondents with the number of cattle paid as the bride price. Stretched lips are a symbol of social maturity.

  • Scarification: scarification is used in many different cultures as a rite of passage or as a means to show sorrow. More about scarification.
  • Piercing: piercings are a kind of body modification that were seen as a status symbol. More about piercings.
  • Ear Stretching (aka gauging or tunneling)

Interfering With Play – Tuesday 11th May

Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. Last week’s column was eclipsed by the news regarding PES 2011, something which I am totally ok with. However, it does mean there has been very little discussion regarding the issues raised, and therefore going over old ground seems like an easy option. At the same time neglecting the news regarding PES 2011 would be very short sighted of me. Therefore this week’s IWP will take a quick look at the latest PES 2011 news, and then will also be open to discussion from the issues raisedlast week . As complicated as it sounds, I think this is the most logical way to progress, seeing as there is still a great deal of discussion regarding the Konami press release. Another quick point, Konami are yet to respond to my question on why they have decided against releasing an International football game to coincide with the World Cup. I thank you guys for your own suggestions why, but hearing it from the horse’s mouth would be very interesting.

“This Could Be, The Perfect Year”

Don’t read too much into the heading, it’s a classic 90’s track by soul singer Dina Carroll. In fact, the choice is more tongue in check than an honest comment, however, this year seems to have Konami saying all the right things yet again. Total Control, Total Freedom. The usual buzzwords that is nothing more than promises, promises which have been both held and broken in recent years. Reading through the 2010press release , the promise of better graphics was certainly kept, but 360 degree movement and improved AI left something to be desired. I think, like many of the PESGaming.com community, I have been burnt by Konami’s promises one too many times and look towards these new revelations with a certain level of concern and trepidation.

But, the clever thing is, that Konami are saying exactly what we want to hear. More Freedom, more control, online Master League, new animations, build up play, passing football. These are the things that many community members have been crying out for. The promised (at the moment that’s all it is) option of mapping feints to the right stick is a top feature, meaning you can use the tricks most appropriate to your game. This is something that is currently a new feature within the football gaming world, and adds a bit of individuality to each game style.

Its far too early to make comments on if Konami are genuinely going to produce a product that incorporates the promises made, and at the same time ensure the game is both playable and enjoyable, but these steps are seemingly in the right direction. I know that we will get some people jumping on the excitement train and hyping up PES 2011 to beyond reality in the next few months, however, I will maintain the view of observing quietly, and waiting to see some concrete in game footage before even beginning to judge.

“This Is It”

With the above said, the one thing I must comment on is the online Master League mode. I will go on record now saying that if Konami get this right, it will become the single greatestfootball gaming mode in the history of the genre. The actual fact that every game you play is against a human opponent, and every deal you make is with real people is a huge boost. The one man’s diamond is another man’s rock philosophy is a huge feature in any game, and you would have players buying young and selling on to make big money. This would fast become a cross between Master League, Social Networking and Football Manager Live, three very addictive things indeed!

I make the above statement in the knowledge that getting this mode right will be very tricky for Konami. For three years they have failed to provide a consistent, stable and universally playable online game with Pro Evolution Soccer. Playing for rankings points is one thing, but when you take into the equation you will be playing for virtualmoney to purchase players, losing to a lagging goal or missing a chance due to poor response issues will become even greater. And then we have the very backwards ways of creating matches, menu’s and inviting friends. And then we have the poor level of stat tracking. And then we have all the known Master League issues such as International weeks, stamina and negotiations. To provide the ultimate online Master League experience will not only be the greatest ever gaming mode in the football genre, but it will also be up there with Konami’s finest ever achievements as a developer (Snake, Snake, SNAKE!)

I would love to here your views on Konami taking on what is surely the Holy Grail. Is it something they are capable of doing? Or is it really something that should have been preceded by basic online domestic leagues? Your views via e-mail or comment are greatly appreciated.

“The Time Is Now”

Just wondering how many people still play PES on the Playstation Two? I know PES 2011 is scheduled for release on the PS2, but surely this will be no more than a bland update. Are there people out there refusing to purchase a 360 or PS3 until PES has reached that pinnacle level, as PES4 5 and 6 did?

Furthermore, with PES now being released on the iPhone, does anyone feel that Konami are taking on too many projects without concentrating on their priority? Lets not forget that Konami released PES solely on the Sony console to start off, before progressing to PC and eventually X Box. Now, PES 2010 will be released on seven different formats, all but three requiring completely different programming, development patterns and control schemes. As an iPhone owner, I look forward to playing PES 2010, but would sacrifice that for a handful of new features in PES 2011. Anyone with a view on either of these issues can get in contact in the usual way.

“This Time Last Week”

Last week, I spoke about Stamina in football gaming, the progression of the single player / fixed cursor / become a legend game mode and the lack of Konami release to coincide with the World Cup. If anyone has anything they would like to add about any of these issues, please feel free to do so in this week’s column, as I will be addressing them further next week.

That’s your lot for this week. Whether there will be aftershocks following the shattering PES news from last week remains to be seen, but I assure you that if it is official, it will be posted on PESGaming.com. interferingwithplay@hotmail.co.uk is the place to send your emails to, alternatively you can comment and make your views known to the world. Finally, I must congratulate Chelsea on their Premier League win. Although they have some of the hate figures in the English game, they have made some of the mid-table teams in the league look terrible, and dismantled some decent defences on more than one occasion this season. Bitter pill to swallow for Manchester United fans, but over the 38 games, the best team does win the league.
